Planning for Blended Families and Second Marriages - Advisors Forum

In a society where half of marriages end in divorce, blended families and second marriages are commonplace. Joining two families together is not usually simple 1 + 1 = 2 arithmetic. Often, it is more like measuring the power of earthquakes, where going up one on the scale increases the intensity by a factor of 10.

Topics covered in this course include the following:

• Classifying ownership of assets, including classification agreements (prenups aren’t just for divorce)
• Using trusts to control assets
• Planning for stepchildren
• Planning when spouses have different beneficiaries
• Making certain that the children of the first spouse to die don’t get disinherited
• Trust options for the surviving spouse
• The effect of remarriage on income, gift, and estate taxes
• Long-term care considerations with remarriage

This course is eligible for 1.0 credit.

To receive certified financial planner (CFP) or continuing education  (CE) credit, you must complete a short multiple-choice quiz. You can expect 15-30 minutes to complete the quiz and must earn a passing score of at least 70 percent.

• You will need to provide the attendance verification code given during the on-demand course and your CFP identification number, if applicable, so have them both ready before starting the quiz.
• Upon passing, you will receive an email with your attached certificate. Keep this email for your records.
• After you have passed the quiz, WealthCounsel will report your credits to the CFP Board within 14 days, if applicable.
• This on-demand program is not eligible for certified professional education (CPE) credit.
